market stand Real Food, Naturally: Are You a Gene Fatalist?

by Glen Boudreaux, Jolie Vue Farms

As in all things living, there has long been a debate between the environmentalists and the geneticists regarding the all-important question of "how long will I live?"

The more recent trend on longevity vel non is "it's all in the genes", leading to the emergence of the gene fatalists whose credo is "live it up because lifestyle makes no difference in longevity." Let's face it, that's a pretty attractive creed for those of us who would prefer a vivid, carefree lifestyle of consumption and vice. I've got to confess, I fell for it, too. Sort of freed me of responsibility for my own life. (My wife didn't let me indulge that thought for long.)

Today, the NY Times reports on a new study that substantially minimizes the role of genes in life span. It sounds like a pretty credible study - the researchers used 10,271 twins born between the years 1870 and 1910, most of whom are now dead. The conclusion: while your genes will predict your height 80-90% of the time, it will predict life span only 3% of the time. Wow! Time to get off the couch, toss the cigar, chips and beer, and get some exercise.

Here's an outstanding example of what the researchers found: Josephine Tesauro is an identical twin and is straight-backed, firm-jawed and active, living alone in a rambling house and still driving her car on errands and escapades to her bridge club and other activities. Her twin sister is still alive but is incontinent, nearly blind, and has dementia. "She just does not comprehend," says the more vibrant sister.

So there it is, folks. How we live contributes to how long we live. Eat good, wholesome food while improving your air and water, and get your exercise regularly. So if you walk to your farmers market to buy tonight's dinner, you cover all of the bases for today's formula for longevity. Exercise while getting good food from farmers who are improving your air and water. You get it all at the Houston Farmers Market. Where else can you enhance your life in so many ways in so little time?

Yours in the local harvest,
Glen Boudreaux
