FRESH MARKET NEWS
Joan sez: "HOT! HOT! HOT! Come to the Markets this week for all the homegrown tomatoes in all shapes, sizes and colors. We'll have lots of peppers and peas too - get them at the peak of flavor!
"Don't be late - the early birds truly get the best choice these days. You should plan on HEAT - wear a hat and bring some water to drink!! Bringing a cooler with ice packs for your fresh veggies is a good idea, to keep them from wilting in the car on the way home."
On Saturdays, you'll find us behind ONION CREEK CAFE at 3106 White Oak Drive between Heights Blvd and Studemont, in the Heights. We're there from 8 AM til noon or til sold out - whichever comes first!! Come early for the best pickings!
On Tuesdays, visit us in the parking lot of CHRIST THE KING LUTHERAN CHURCH, in Rice Village, 2353 Rice Blvd at Greenbriar. Tuesday hours are 4 PM til 7 PM, every week!

Market Recipe: GAZPACHO
Gazpacho is a cold soup based on fresh, ripe tomatoes, perfect for a cool summer meal on a hot day. A quick and easy gazpacho can be made from a leftover lettuce and tomato salad, poured into the blender and blended until just chunky! A little tomato juice, red wine vinegar and virgin olive oil will add to the flavor and texture. Here's another recipe:
- 2 lb fresh tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped (reserve 1/3 cup)
- 1/3 lb fresh cucumbers, peeled, seeded and chopped (reserve 1/4 cup)
- 1/3 c chopped red or green bell pepper (reserve 1 T)
- 1/3 c chopped red onion (reserve 1 T)
- 1/2 t chopped garlic
- 1 T chopped jalapeno pepper
- 3 T red wine vinegar
- 1/4 c olive oil
- 1 c tomato juice
- 1 T lime juice
- salt and pepper to taste
- croutons for garnish
- fresh cilantro for garnish
Put all the ingredients except the reserved chopped vegetables and the garnish into a blender or food processor, and blend/pulse until smooth. Garnish individual servings with croutons, cilantro and the chopped vegetables. A dab of sour cream is a delicious addition!
