strawberries Farmers Market Vendor: Richard Cole of CLAYBURY PRODUCTS

IN HIS OWN WORDS:

I was born and raised on the Caribbean island of Barbados where my father's family has been since 1632. They were settlers and owned a plantation. My mother's folks have always been planters and always managed plantations.

I moved to Houston in 1980 after living in Chicago, Toronto and southwest Wisconsin. I have been in the hospitality business ever since my parents owned a hotel in Barbados.

When my mother immigrated to Canada and retired, she bought a place in northern Ontario in a town called Owen Sound. I took a sabbatical for about 3 years and went there and farmed. I sold my produce, sauces, pesto, breads and cured salmon at the farmers market. I have always loved cooking and baking and so, now I have an opportunity to do so again for the Houston Farmers Market.

The name I chose for my company is the name of the plantation in Barbados that my mother's family managed for generations and has a lot of fond memories for me.
