Real Food, Naturally Encore: Seasonality, The Natural Rhythm
by Glen Boudreaux
President, Houston Farmers' Market
www.jolievuefarms.com
The farmers and food artisans at the Houston Farmer's Market sell more than food. We also sell philosophy. What's that, you say? Yes, we sell philosophy.
When you put real food on your table, you are not simply fueling your body, you are expressing a philosophy that embraces such things as improving the environment, treating animal and plant life with respect, supporting the local farmer, and joyfully celebrating the season. Most of all, you are buying a philosophy of harmony with nature. There are many verses to this philosophy. Today we focus briefly on eating in harmony with nature's cycles.
Seasonality is all about eating fresh foods produced locally. And the philosophy is expressed in this way - we understand that we will not have great tomatoes year round, but when we do have fresh tomatoes, they will be exceptionally good and good for us. And when we don't have fresh tomatoes, we will have something of similar quality while we wait for our tomatoes to return in their season. That is not to say that we never eat a tomato outside of its local season, because we do. It is to say that we emphasize that which is in season as our dominant choice.
When we are in harmony with nature, we feed not only the body, but the soul. Nature is our home, our natural residence; that is a philosophy we can live with. Buy it at the Houston Farmer's Market.
